Information for Artists

All of our artists have hands-on experience working with children K-12. Most of our artists have their own websites showing examples of their work. Some websites also include short video clips from past residencies. See a complete list of Artist-in-Residence Artists.

If you are a professional artist and would like to join ArtsEast’s roster of Artist-in-Residence artists, please download an application and submit to ArtsEast along with supporting materials. There is no deadline for submitting an application; we are always interested in expanding our roster!

Inside the Artist-in-Residence handbook, you will find general information about the residency. Please take a moment to review the Handbook and contact ArtsEast if you have any questions.

General Guidelines

ArtsEast encourages artists to develop residencies and other programs that support or
enhance existing arts curriculum. Artists are also encouraged to develop staff in‐service
options, as well as follow‐up activities or resources that may be left with teachers.

A residency requires the artist to participate in a thorough pre‐residency planning meeting
with on‐site coordinators and teachers in order to arrange orientation, class schedules and
materials. This is considered a part of the residency. A teacher must be present at all times
during school residencies or other programs. Artists may be asked to help plan community
outreach activities.

Qualifications

To be considered, an artist must have substantial experience working in arts education or with an arts organization that offers a fully developed arts education program (arts workshops for children and adults). An experienced teaching artist should be able to make connections between the art form they are teaching with another educational area, such as science, social studies, history, or math. Minimum qualifications are:

  • 2 years’ experience working in arts education in one or more of the following setting: public/private school K-12, art centers, youth organizations
  • ArtsEast requires every new artist to undergo a background check whether or not you may already have one from another organization.
  • Artists must be familiar with Oregon Department of Education’s Oregon Arts Content Standards. Artists must also demonstrate the ability to integrate the Oregon Arts Content Standards into their residencies.
