History
Since 1982, ArtsEast has contracted with regional schools and communities to provide Artist Residencies in eastern Oregon. On average we provide 45 weeks per year or 900 contact hours of arts instruction in public schools. We offer residencies in dance, theater, writing, visual arts and music. Our 22 artists are required to develop sequential and developmentally appropriate arts lessons based on Oregon Department of Education’s Oregon Arts Content Standards.
If you would like to participate in our Artist-in-Residency program, download the Artist-in-Residence Handbook 2011-2012 for more information.
The Handbook outlines how to plan a successful residency, covers information on scheduling sessions, and responsibilities of the On-Site Coordinator. Once you have reviewed the Handbook and would like to book a residency for your school, please complete an Application. Once your Application is received, your AiR Coordinator at ArtsEast will contact the artist and check availability.
Purpose
ArtsEast supports partnerships with regional and statewide artists, arts and arts education
organizations in order to achieve the following:
- ensure the arts are an integral component of education in Oregon; and
- promote lifelong learning arts experiences for eastern Oregonians.
ArtsEast uses professional artists to promote arts education in a variety of
learning environments. ArtsEast supports professional development and arts education
activities for education and artistic communities.
A successful residency is one where the Artist and Teacher/Staff collaborate to create a positive learning environment in the classroom and offers students new knowledge and experience in the arts. The residency also aims to assist schools in meeting the Oregon Department of Education’s Content Standards in the Arts and in other subject areas.
Here are Ten Lessons the Arts Teach, adapted by Learning and the Arts: Crossing Boundaries, by Elliot Eisner, Stanford University.
Program Format
Artist residencies sponsored through ArtsEast are scheduled by the week. Artists provide
approximately 20 on‐site classroom hours per week, with four 45-60 minute sessions per day. The average residency request is for 2 weeks, but this number varies depending on the specific site’s needs. Artists may work with pre‐school through adult populations, including special education, at‐risk and gifted populations, but the majority of residencies occur in elementary and middle schools. Additional services may include performances, workshops, teacher trainings and individually designed special projects.
The visiting Artist is a guest in the classroom, therefore a certified teacher must be present at all times to maintain a positive learning environment. Active teacher-participation is highly encouraged, as a working partnership between the Artist and Teacher enhances the learning environment and can help further the goals of the classroom.
